Southland residents recall horrors, hope of Katrina
September 6, 2010Just the words " Hurricane Katrina " dredge up horrific images for many. When it struck on Aug. 29, 2005, Katrina caused widespread devastation in the central Gulf Coast region, tearing through levees, leaving 80 percent of New Orleans flooded and taking more than 1,800 lives. For some Southlanders, memories come from actually being there, either as victims or volunteers who went to help.
